Scratch David Shaw off the potential NFL coaching list
Posted by Mike Florio on December 19, 2012, 1:16 PM EST It’s easy to identify the coaches who are in danger of being fired. It’s hard to compile a comprehensive dance card of possible replacements. And with the NFL hiring pendulum swinging toward college coaches, one less candidate apparently won’t be available in 2013. Via Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, Stanford has announced that head coach David Shaw has signed a long-term extension. The concept of a long-term deal for a college coach often is nebulous, especially since any head coach who wants to leave a college program often does. That said, Kawakami believes that Shaw likely will be staying for a while. Indeed, it would be awkward to say the least for Shaw to leave in the aftermath of signing an extension. Still, as Stanford continues to thrive, Shaw will eventually have plenty of opportunities to follow former Stanford coaches like Bill Walsh, Dennis Green, and Jim Harbaugh to the NFL. |
Well, okay then.
On to the next candidate. |
I don't think this means anything other than he's locked up at Stanford.
If an NFL team offered $5 million per year, I'd be surprised if he didn't jump. |
Sucks for us, but I like to see this.
He wants to be at Stanford, so he's staying at Stanford. Good for him. |

All it does is raise the potential price tag. |
I'm ok with this.

IMO, all this contract does is lock him up at Stanford. It doesn't and can't preclude him from taking an NFL job. |
ok, resume the search in Oregon then.

Would be a great candidate.

I just saw this. Damn, I really like Shaw. Who knows, maybe he can still be had...but it would look pretty dickish for him to do that. Normally I would say that doesn't matter, but Stanford is where he went to school and has on numerous times called it a destination job.
I personally think he's off the table. |
Off the table, or driving up the price (in which case I'd hope Clark wouldn't hire him)
|
College contracts are only worth the buyout.
