The Mayan Prophecy Comes True For My Apricot BMW.

Okay, it'll survive, but it's a bummer.

My wife was walking to the car after her yoga class, and some fellow was trying to parallel park in front of her. As she walked up, he apparently decided that there were two parking spots, not one, and decided to back into our spot.

Tell me how this happens, but somehow he ended up more or less broadsiding our car. He hit the side of the car BEHIND the driver door, right in front of the back wheel. It didn't affect anything mechanical, but now it's got a big ol' dent in it, and my bigger worry is that it scraped up the paint.

This car's paint is very unusual. BMW didn't go to market with it, so it's not a normal BMW color. It looks like some places sell touch-up paint, but will it match on a big swath of the fender? Or am I going to have to repaint the whole car? It's 12 years old, so I'd suspect that there's some fading.

I would really hate to repaint the whole car.

It's okay. Maybe you can buy a Miata with pink and purple peace symbols and dove graphics all over it next time.

SPchief 12-22-2012 11:37 AM

I'm guessing you'll have to repaint. This time go with neon orange

El Jefe might have some insight to the repaint.

Step up to a Bentley. I know there is one for sell somewhere.

It depends. If he paint itself is a pretty good match, then a talented paint man can match it really well. I have a silver car, one of her harder colors to match. Dude nailed my rear bumper work. Talk with Sauto...

With that much age you would probably have to repaint the entire car. But since it is Apricot in color a person would probably be glad for this opportunity.

threebag 12-22-2012 11:43 AM

Maybe its time to move from apricot to plum.

threebag 12-22-2012 11:45 AM

Maybe with a sleeker color she will coast into the garage more than once.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to repaint it, because even if a patch would work I'll be paranoid about what will happen three years from now.

It's not like this car will ever be a massively valuable collector car, but my father the purist hates repainting cars and always said it'll impact its value. Since it is a non-production color, repainting it is not desirable to me.

It is strictly up to you how particular you are. It is all about compromise and how perfect you want it.

A first rate body shop will make it look very nice by painting the panel and blending it.

Frazod 12-22-2012 11:59 AM

You should cover the damaged areas with Peyton Manning bumberstickers.

This. And they can usually picture and match the paint color very well.
