AZ House of Reps Introduce Bill To Require Loyalty Oath To Graduate High School
 

Arizona House Bill 2467. Introduced by Representatives Thorpe, Borrelli, Seel, Shope, Smith: Dial, Livingston, Senator Crandell:

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Title 15, chapter 7, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-701.03, to read:


15-701.03. Graduation requirement; constitutional oath


Beginning in the 2013‑2014 school year, In addition to fulfilling the course of study and assessment requirements prescribed in this chapter, before a pupil is allowed to graduate from a public high school in this state, the principal or head teacher of the school shall verify in writing that the pupil has recited the following oath:


I, _________, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge these duties; So help me God.

So will Arizona sue if the kids taking the oath don't fullfill said oath at some time in their lives?

It's a double whammy. They are trying to make kids take what is essentially a military or public service oath, and do so by swearing to God. Failure to make this oath keeps you from graduating. I have seen comments that the politicians are working on dropping the "so help me God" part of the oath, as that might cause the most difficulty for them if not make the law completely unenforceable. Even without that it's troubling.

I would seriously doubt that anyone has thought that far ahead.

The Oath of Enlistment (for enlisted):

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

The Oath of Office (for officers):

"I, _____ (SSAN), having been appointed an officer in the _____ (Military Branch) of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to he same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God."
