Conspiracy Theory Regarding Jonathan Ogden
Did he get into the Hall of Fame over Will Shields because the Ravens are in the Super Bowl this year?
It really annoyed me to see him standing there on the coin flip, taking the spot that was rightfully Will's. There had to be a reason for it. Ogden played 12 years, missing 15 starts and being named a pro bowler 11 times. He was an all-pro 4 times. Will Shields played 14 years and never missed a start. In the first game of his rookie season he wasn't the starter, but played. He was named a pro bowler 12 times and was an all-pro 2 times. |
Clearly. I don't get too worked up about the HOF because all I want is a championship but I agree with you. If the Patriots are in the SuperBowl today, Shields gets the nod and Ogden waits another year.

Tackle is a more important position than guard.
There's no way the Hall was going to put in four offensive lineman. Shields didn't a win a Super Bowl, let alone, multiple Super Bowls. He'll get in soon but he'll have a longer wait, much like Derrick Thomas.T he fact that Shields and DT didn't win anything kept them out longer than "usual". |
Ogden won a title. We didn't have much postseason success in Wil's years. Two playoff wins which is half of what Ogden won in 2001 alone

The positional value of G vs LT and post-season success have already been mentioned.
The times named All-Pro are also pretty important. Ogden has all of the advantages. |
Left tackle is the "glamour" position for offensive linemen.

Hard to argue with Ogden IMO.

I consider Willie Roaf a better LT than Ogden but he was passed over his first year. Like mentioned above...maybe had he been in a SB he would have secured that first ballot nomination?
11 time pro-bowl....9 time ALL PRO selection. |
I wonder if RavensPlanet posters were arguing for drafting Tony Banks or Bobby Hoying over Jonathan Ogden in the 1996 draft.
