Mock (2/18/13)
Assumptions:
1. The Chiefs resign Bowe and Colquitt, tag Albert, and let Dorsey walk. 2. Quinn and Hillis are out. Jackson stays but at reduced salary a three-year deal. 3. Cassel is handed his walking papers, and the team trades its to the Eagles for Nick Foles (playing around with some of the rumors). 3. The Chiefs land DE/DT Chris Canty and ILB Brad Jones in free agency. 4. They get two compensatory picks, an extra third (Carr) and a 6th (Richardson). On with the show: 1. QB Geno Smith, West Virginia Considering that I've retained Branden Albert and brought in Canty, there's really nowhere else here to go but with Smith. 2. CB Jordan Poyer, Oregon State Not the towering guy the Chiefs could really use at the positioin (5'11"), but the Eagles need a Day One starter at the corner position, and Poyer's a really versatile, smart corner. I read that he exploded onto the scene a year ago at Oregon State -- he has a high learning curve and excellent speed. 3. NT Kwame Geathers, Georgia I figure: let's get ahead of the Dontari Poe problem. Poe can clearly get after it, but he has yet to prove he can clog lanes effectively. While we do have Jerrell Powe, I never like the odds of lower-round guys during a schematic transition. At the very least, when the Chiefs decide to put four on the DL, they've got a deep rotation of beef. 4. RB Mike Gillislee, Florida BPA. Looking at my big board, Gillislee about fits at this spot (where a need still exists). I think the Chiefs need a versatile runner to compliment Charles, not necessarily just a plodder. Gillislee isn't that much bigger than Charles but he has superb speed and actually runs with force. 5. OG Hugh Thornton, Illinois BPA. I like Thornton a lot as a raw athlete. Like Jeff Allen, Thornton will need some work, but I love his athleticism for our system. I think he could legitimately run a 5.0 40. 6. QB Matt Scott, Arizona BPA. Andy Reid has proven he likes QBs from Arizona. Scott's more of an athletic wonder and would allow the team to move on from the Ricky Stanzi experiment. 6. ILB Sio Moore, Connecticut I really love the talent here in Moore. I think he's got really solid athletic ability and can really do everything you ask an athletic DJ-type to do. He can rack up damage at the line of scrimmage, sure, but he's especially talented in coverage. Finally giving the Chiefs a semblence of depth here. 7. WR Denard Robinson, Michigan This is a fun, experimental draft pick, since Andy Reid is not immune to these. Robinson is a mobile QB who is making the move to WR. |
QB: Smith vs. Foles, Scott
RB: Charles, Gillislee, Gray, Droughn FB: DiMarco WR: Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, McCluster, Wylie, Robinson TE: Moeaki, Boss, Maneri LT: Albert, Stephenson LG: Allen, Thornton C: Hudson, Patterson RG: Asamoah, Thornton RT: Winston, Stephenson DE: Canty, Long NT: Poe, Geathers, Powe DE: Jackson, Poe OLB: Hali, Jones ILB: Jones, Siler ILB: Johnson, Moore OLB: Houston, Studebaker CB: Flowers, Poyer, Arenas, Daniels, Brown S: Berry, Abdullah, Lewis, Hartman K: Succop P: Colquitt LS: Gafford |
Would like to get a better CB at 2, but overall, I like it.

I know you brought in a free agent ILB, but I would love to have Minter there in the second and keep our 3rd rounder as I don't think Foles is a legit option.

I like all the picks except the Kwame Geathers one. Dude is softer than Charmin and fatter than Bill Williamson

I like the idea of Canty and Jones in FA. What about Trufant in the 2nd? Or does everyone think he'll be gone?

Yes to Poyer. No to overrated Huskies trash.
|
not a fan of geathers, but hard to complain about him in the 3rd....pretty sure someone will reach for him though
i think we need a dynamic back as well, so no problem there... there won't be (better not be) a QB competition if you spend the #1 pick on a QB... |
I wonder what we would do if we drafted Thornton. That's three Illinois players playing guard on the same team ROFL
|
Question. Why would you STILL draft QB at 1.1 if you are bringing in Foles? You make a move like that under the assumption that he can and will start from day 1. The logic behind that pick is astounding. I'd rather see a Dee Miliner pick there if we're bringing in Foles. It makes more sense schematically, and we can still pick up an insurance policy at 2.2 or 3.1
|
Trufant IS overrated. We'd end up regretting it if we took him in the 2nd. He's a fine 3rd round guy though. But at the top of the 2nd if we can get Rhodes or Amerson I'll be happy with that.

I'm not taking Joekel (sp) if I've resigned Albert. The other options for me at that point are defensive line (which I've stacked with Jackson-Poe-Canty) or passrusher. I think solidifying the QB position at that point is the best thing the Chiefs can do. |
