Covitz:Alarm bells briefly ring for Chiefs’ Eric Fisher

Alarm bells briefly ring for Chiefs’ Eric Fisher

It looked a bit ominous when Chiefs rookie offensive tackle Eric Fisher, escorted by club medical personnel, headed for the locker room Friday night during the first half’s 2-minute warning.

Fisher, the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, started at right tackle against the New Orleans Saints and participated in all 14 plays of the game’s opening touchdown drive.

As it turned out, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Fisher’s injury was minor, a sore left thumb. But Fisher spent quite a bit of time in the trainer’s room with ice on the thumb after the 17-13 loss to the Saints.

“I just banged up my thumb a little bit,” Fisher said. “My hands have been banged up all camp. We’ll find out more … but I’m feeling all right.”

Fisher couldn’t pinpoint exactly when he got hurt.

“You’re in a zone out there,” he said. “You try to remember, but sometimes you don’t. When I came off the field, my thumb was hurting a little bit, and I got it checked out.”

After he was examined, Fisher returned to the sidelines and watched the second half from the bench with the rest of the first unit.

“I had a blast tonight,” he said. “It was great to play in an NFL game. It was a goal of mine for a long time, and it’s a good feeling.”

If Fisher is unable to practice or play this week, he’ll join growing list of injured tackles. Backup Donald Stephenson missed the past week after undergoing surgery on a broken pinky finger on his left hand, though he is expected to return next week.

The club already has lost two rookie free agent tackles for the season, Dustin Waldron and Colin Kelly with knee injuries, and Tommie Draheim is out with a concussion. The Chiefs brought in another free agent tackle on Thursday, Hutch Erickson, who was in uniform Friday night.

Besides Fisher’s injury, backup defensive end Austin Lane left the game with sore ribs, and cornerback Neiko Thorpe was dehydrated and cramped.

Don't see it in the article, but I'm pretty sure during the telecast they said that x-rays on the thumb were negative.

Yep, he was just saying they're going to keep an eye on it and see how it heals.

X rays came back negative?

How about these other "finger injuries" that caused the guy to get thrown around by guys he was facing in practice?

You good to go, Fish?

Nah coach....sore thumb.

Now it's driving me crazy, and most likely no one can help me out, but it's worth a try.

That name reminded me of a bit, I think it was on a podcast, might've been on a TV show, but two or three guys were cracking each other up coming up with ridiculous action movie names.

Strap Hunkman
Swing Bigunit
Hunk Schwantzmaster
Burt Smokeybandit

not those specific names, but something along those lines.

Fisher played very well. The O line looks to be a very good unit.

I hope this doesn't become something that becomes problematic or an excuse for this guy. We have heard about him complaining about his hand during TC. Get over it.

I hope you're not implying he's faking an injury. He wasn't getting thrown around yesterday. He looked pretty good for a noob.

OrtonsPiercedTaint 08-10-2013 08:51 AM

I think the hand stuff came from John Clayton, not EF complaining

We've heard jackasses complaining about him complaining about hand injuries during training camp.

Hopefully it doesn't become problematic.

LMAO this couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact Reid said Fisher was tough because he just kept going after injuring his hand.

JFC some of you are just dying to find a reason to bash the guy.

Albert struggled his first season and everyone complained then, too.

"Move him to Guard," they said.

Now they beg to get him re-signed.

Cut the guy some slack, let's see how he develops. Jesus
