2013 Farm Bill

I heard a snippet on the radio yesterday about the farm bill. I've been on the combine solid for several days and it's a PIA to sift through a bunch of articles on my phone. Would anybody be willing to give a summation of where this nonsense is?

TIA

Drovers journal online is excellent for ag info. Lots of pressure on Washington to get it done in light of the blizzard losses in South Dakota. Estimates now are in excess of 60,000 head of cattle died in the storm. And media ignored the whole thing best I can tell.

Pretty much at standstill over the differences. Safe to say its not on the radar till the games are over being played out now.

Thanks.

A local guy was harvesting up there and has combines stuck in the snow. Funk dat.

House is trying to pull food stamps out. Does that include WIC and school lunches too?

Yeah. News item must have been that the house passed theirs.

****ing expired is what it is. Thanks to the government shutdown. ****ing idiot politicians. And you are the only person I've heard even mention it.

From what I've heard, here's the highlights of the worst effects:

Lack of disaster insurance for livestock.
US Forest service will only get half of what they were expected to get if it would have passed.
FDA food inspection is running at about half its resources. But surprisingly, the drug inspection side of the FDA wasn't reduced.
Many USDA laws and regulations with revert to 1940s standards at the end of the year. Yikes.
The CDC is significantly reduced for the time being. Let's hope there's no zombie outbreak during the shutdown.

Hopefully they'll get around to passing a bill sometime in the next 10 years or so....

Yeah. I'm just hoping RMA lets the 2013 claims get worked.

I was hoping the news item was that the dumb****s actually did something. Wrong as usual.

According to the Missouri Farm Bureau people, they have to put the food stamps and WIC stuff in to get it passed, even though it takes up 80% of the bill.

83% of the 08 bill. Higher percentage of the senate passed bill.

It's the universal perception that it will never pass without the food programs. I understand why the house wants it out but it will probably **** everything.

Disaster aid on the cattle lossed will get covered. nRCS folks even though they cant go to an office cause Obama said no are letting livestock people knw what the process will be. How to document

School luches wont be cut unless mooch does a new run at starving kids and feeding them the shit she came up with before. Revert to the. 40s ? Who makes this shit up

Food inspections have not been cut. Goofy shit gets repeated and made more goofy.

I believe the farm bill expires January 1. I haven't paid much attention, but I'm pretty sure they've got a whole lot of not a damn thing done on it.

I have no idea how the dairy portion of the bill works, but it looks like we are going to find out if all the claims about $7/gallon milk are true.

Cochise 12-30-2013 09:07 AM

I'm not too sure about that. People just wouldn't buy milk anymore.

Like I said, I'm a long way removed from the Dairy market. I don't know how the pricing works. That's just what people are freaking out about. They said the same thing last year before they extended the 2008 farm bill. But they've said that it is "too broken" and they're not extending it again.

Fairplay 12-30-2013 09:44 AM

It will drive up milk prices if not passed they say.

jiveturkey 12-30-2013 10:07 AM

Does anyone know how this works? Are we subsidizing milk for everyone?

Cause that seems wacky.
