A year or two ago I saw a stat on teams that had these 2 records over the years, and the significance of those records in relation to making the playoffs.
I don't recall what those actual numbers are (I hope some network will put them on the screen this weekend), but 0-4 is not good. 4-0 on the other hand had like a 75-80% success rate in making the playoffs. We are staring 0-4 straight in the face. It doesn't bode well by the numbers. |
I threw this in, because there are a couple of teams in our division 3-0 (Broncos and Chargers).
The year the Chargers went to the Super Bowl, I don't know what their pre-season record was. It was the regular season they started 0-4. |
Coogs,
I don't know the numbers either (although my general impression was different), but I don't believe you can make the same statistical comparisons from preseason as you can during the regular season. As a matter of fact, I once heard someone suggest that NFL stats should be divided up between the first eight games and the last half. All I know is this. We have a good team, and we have some problems. The question is this: Are our problems fixible, and if so, can we fix them in time for the opener? If not, how many games into the season will it be before we start operating and executing up to our potential? These are not questions that are unique to this year (or this team), never the less, they are, IMO, the main questions facing us today. Luz i think our problems are the fixable type... |
I'm still not giving up hope! Becasue a few years back when Dallas won back to back supebowls, they were 0-8 in the preseason! It can happen!
|
I think 0-4 could potentially shake the confidence of the team. I could be wrong, but I think it could impact them.
I dont see us winning this last game, because we wont be doing anything and playing most of the srubbeenies. |
Luz,
like I said, I hope some network flashes those numbers this weekend. If I remember correctly, only a very few teams have ever made the playoffs after going winless in the preseason. I want to say it is less than 5, but will say 10 instead. Not wanting to be 0-4 and take on history too. |
I think we could swing it.. I mean, although it was a loss, we came **** close against Jacksonville this weekend.. and I'm sure noone even expected us to do that much,
|
I've got lousy short term memory,But didn't KC go 0-4 in 97?
|
No, alan, KC has never gone 0-fer in the preseason.
2034: You have to look at what the 1st team did only to get a good idea, and we managed 6 pts both times failing to score in the red zone. [This message has been edited by KCTitus (edited 08-22-2000).] |
Chief2034,
I didn't say anything about winning the superbowl as the Cowboys did, there is just a strong history of 0-4 preseason not making the playoffs. |
If not for piss-poor tackling in the 4th quarter (see Stith run), we would have won that game.
As I've said many times before, preseason serves one purpose: personnel evaluation. Would I like to see the coaching staff 'open it up' a bit? Yes... but I understand why they don't: it is easier to evaluate a player executing the basics. If a player is fundamentally sound, then you know what they are, and are not, capable of. ------------------ [i]This space for rent!</I> |
TITUS.. YEAH, I GUESS YOURE RIGHT...I'M JUST TRYING TO BE OPTIMISTIC YA' KNOW? I REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS TEAM DO SOMETHING THIS YEAR!
|
2034,
Yes the final score was close, but when the "starters" fpr the most part left the field we were down 16-6. This includes a 2nd string O-line for Jax and NO Fred Taylor. |
Coogs,
I thought we were down 10-6 when the starters left? Luz am i wrong?... |
coog... i completely get what you are saying about there being a history of not making the playoffs with an 0-4 preseason record...you're right! I was just trying to give a little ray hope saying that "hey! it can happen!" that was pretty much just aimed towards skeptics who think that our entire season is already over!
