Garage Sale Bowl Sells for $2.25 million.

If you're the family that sold it, you're probably kicking yourself now. And just how does a 1,000 year-old Song Dynasty bowl end up in garage sale anyway?

By the way, the article is about six months old. Sorry for the delay in posting it.

$3 Garage Sale Bowl Makes Family $2 Million Richer

by BLAIRE BRIODY

Itís every garage sale shopperís dream: Pay pocket change for someone elseís used china, then find out one day that itís worth millions.

A New York family had that dream come true yesterday. They bought a small used bowl for $3 at a garage sale back in 2007 and displayed it on their living room mantelpiece for years, with no idea of its real value.

In fact, that little white, five-inch bowl probably just sat there collecting dust all these years.

Recently, though, the family decided to see what it was worth. They had it examined by experts Ė and found out it was a rare 1,000-year-old item from the Northern Song Dynasty.

Sothebyís estimated it would sell for $200,000 to $300,000 Ė not bad for a mere $3 garage-sale bowl.

But yesterday in New York City, during the opening session of Sothebyís fine Chinese ceramics and art auction, things got even better. Much better.

A London dealer, Giuseppe Eskenazi, paid a shocking $2.225 million for the little bowl. It turns out thereís only one other known bowl of the same size and decoration, and itís been sitting in Londonís famed British Museum for more than 60 years.

Talk about spending $3 wisely.

For the rest of us, garage sales just might be packed to the gills this weekend.

Based on my experience watching Antiques Roadshow, I'll never accidentally buy a valuable piece of pottery because every valuable piece of pottery I see is quite unattractive. This bowl's not bad, but honestly, if I had seen it at a garage sale I don't think I would've paid three dollars for it.

I know I would've ignored it.

I assume the 6 month delay was due to you researching and fact checking to assure the articles accuracy, therefore you are forgiven.

I would have paid the $3 and pissed my pants with excitement. But antique Asian items are one of the items in my wheelhouse

Actually, 0.00 cents. I would never have even been interested in it.
