Computer help (boots for a few secs. and then nothing)

So got a new rig and like the topic says...plug it in to the surge protector...boots up and lights up, fans run and everything and then it just shuts itself off and won't come back on.

The clr cmos button is lit up on the back of the tower and on the inside there's a little power button and a button labeled reset both lit up.

I have no clue and any help would greatly be appreciated.

Make sure all power supply plugs in to the motherboard are secure. There are usually 2 of them. My guess is that the smaller one (usually plugs in near the CPU) isn't secure

I'm a complete dumb shit when it comes to computers so what do those look like?

The motherboard is the great big flat board with everything plugged into it, the powersupply is the thing you plug the power cord into. On the inside, find the cords that go from the power supply to the motherboard. One of the cords has more wires, that one is probably ok. Vegas is talking about the other one with less wires. I'd say press in the clip and wiggle that one out, and then plug it back in again to make sure it is secure...see if that fixes it.

Also, make sure you aren't using some sort of magnetic gloves and if your hair is standing on end with static electricity, you might just want to put the cover back on it and go to some geek store.

Oh, and make sure the powersupply isn't plugged into the wall.

All the wiring is snug and nothing is loose...the tower is plugged into a surge protector.

ROFL

It makes you feel like a moron, but it's a huge relief when you find such a simple solution to a problem like this. My wife had a presentation to give at one of her volunteer organizations one time and she couldn't get the sound to work so she called me. I'm no IT support expert like some of these guys on CP so I was worried that I wasn't going to be able to help, but thankfully I "solved" her problem by asking her if she plugged the speakers into the wall electrical outlet, which of course she hadn't.
