2013 Draft in Review
I know there were a lot of mixed opinions on here regarding taking Fisher at 1.1 last year. Some loved the pick and some wanted Geno Smith.
I ask each of you to analyze what we accomplished this season and look back at ALL the 1st round picks. Knowing what we know now: Fisher didn't make a huge impact (same for other rookies); our defense folded like a cheap tent down the stretch after starting off strong........... Obviously all of our OT's played at some point during the season but which player drafted in the 1st round of the 2013 draft would've arguably made a bigger IMPACT? 1 1 Kansas City Chiefs Eric Fisher OT Central Michigan 1 2 Jacksonville Jaguars Luke Joeckel OT Texas A&M 1 3 Miami Dolphins Dion Jordan DE Oregon 1 4 Philadelphia Eagles Lane Johnson OT Oklahoma 1 5 Detroit Lions Ezekiel Ansah DE BYU 1 6 Cleveland Browns Barkevious Mingo DE LSU 1 7 Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Cooper G North Carolina 1 8 St. Louis Rams Tavon Austin WR West Virginia 1 9 New York Jets Dee Milliner CB Alabama 1 10 Tennessee Titans Chance Warmack G Alabama 1 11 San Diego Chargers D. J. Fluker OT Alabama 1 12 Oakland Raiders D. J. Manuel QB Florida State 1 17 Pittsburgh Steelers Jarvis Jones LB Georgia 1 18 San Francisco 49ers Eric Reid S LSU 1 19 New York Giants Justin Pugh G Syracuse 1 20 Chicago Bears Kyle Long G Oregon 1 21 Cincinnati Bengals Tyler Eifert TE Notre Dame 1 22 Atlanta Falcons Desmond Trufant CB Washington 1 23 Minnesota Vikings Sharrif Floyd DT Florida 1 24 Indianapolis Colts Björn Werner DE Florida State 1 25 Minnesota Vikings Xavier Rhodes CB Florida State 1 26 Green Bay Packers Datone Jones DE UCLA 1 27 Houston Texans DeAndre Hopkins WR Clemson 1 28 Denver Broncos Sylvester Williams DT North Carolina 1 29 Minnesota Vikings Cordarrelle Patterson WR Tennessee 1 30 St. Louis Rams Alec Ogletree LB Georgia 1 31 Dallas Cowboys Travis Frederick C Wisconsin 1 32 Baltimore Ravens Matt Elam S Florida My vote would have been for Vaccaro, Elam, or Reid. |
A safety at #1 overall. Makes perfect sense.
I would have made an investment at QB at the time. In retrospect, I would have drafted Star Lotulelei #1 overall. I also like Sheldon Richardson, but he's not out of the clear yet. His character concerns can still come home to roost. Lotulelei is going to be an All Pro for a very long time. |
Be objective........would Lotulelei have made a larger impact than a safety? I don't think so.
Focus not on draft postion but who would've made a bigger impact. Of course pass rush impacts coverage so I get that. |
Mingo or Jordan.

Maybe I should ask each response to tell how they would've made an impact.

Vacarro can yet still be an All Pro talent, but it's not yet clear. The other two are good, but definitely not in Lotulelei's league. |

But where does Star fit in our 3-4? Would it negate some of his dominance? Richardson excelled in the Jets 3-4 defense. It might be safe to assume that Star could have as well....but it's not a guarantee.

Would taking a part time player at #1 be stupid? More than likely yes. But Fisher might as well have been a part time player this year anyways. |

FTR - I'm in the camp that thinks Hali (despite being held frequently) is going to start a steep decline soon. |
If you're basing everything off immediate impact this year.....then you either go FS or WR because they were our biggest holes. Austin or Patterson give's Smith another weapon.

With that being said, for the purposes of this discussion let's assume that the #1 pick has to start for KC. Therefore, someone else will be replaced. In that case, we can project Jordan's stats over the full 16 game season. |
