Interesting strategy in the 49ers-Saints game

Basically, the Saints had 8 seconds left on the clock prior to half - enough time to take one shot at the end zone, then kick the field goal. The 49ers corners all intentionally held the Saints receivers. 5 yard penalty, but it prevented any shot at all of the end zone, and 4 seconds ran off the clock. The Saints were forced to kick the field goal.

Difference between losing by 19 rather than 23.

Game changer that's for sure.

Well, there's that. The strategy was sound, though. I would hope Sutton would see this and keep it as a tool in the arsenal.

Very interesting. At first it seems nonsensical, but it's a good idea. Terrible for the sport, but a good idea for gaming the rules.

The NFL will find a way to penalize this strategy if it becomes a common practice.

Hack-a-Shaq... sometimes the penalty is better than the other potential outcome, like a cornerback intentionally holding a receiver who has him beat for a sure touchdown

How would that change anything? This is not the same as what SF did.

Game can't end on a defensive penalty.

They still get their chance to do a hail mary regardless.

With 6 seconds left, all you've done is moved them 5 yards closer for their hail mary.
