R.I.P Miguel Ferrer

I had no idea who it was by name, but as soon as I saw the picture I remember seeing him in several movies/shows.

According to Deadline, actor Miguel Ferrer—probably best known to A.V. Club readers for his work on Twin Peaks, though he also had prominent roles on NCIS: Los Angeles, Crossing Jordan, and in RoboCop—has died today after a battle with cancer. He was 61.

Born in Santa Monica, California in 1955, Ferrer was the son of Academy Award-winner José Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney, making him the first cousin of George Clooney. Deadline says he was “an accomplished drummer” before he became an actor, having recorded with The Who’s Keith Moon and toured with his mother and Bing Crosby. His first acting job came in 1981, when he appeared on an episode of Magnum, P.I., and he began getting more and more frequent gigs throughout the ‘80s.

Ferrer is known for a handful of memorable roles, and the first of them came in 1987, when he appeared in Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop as Bob Morton, the man who pushes for the implementation of the RoboCop program and then gets killed for his effort. His death also happens to be one of the most iconic scenes of the whole movie:

His career took off even more in the ‘90s, perhaps thanks to his memorable appearance in Twin Peaks as Albert Rosenfeld, a cynical, by-the-book FBI agent who—like most people on that show—later proved to have a lot more depth than it seemed at first.

After Twin Peaks, Ferrer appeared in The Stand, Broken Badges, On The Air, and he had regular roles on Crossing Jordan, Desperate Housewives, Adventure Time, and—most recently—on NCIS: Los Angeles.

Ferrer was set to reprise his role as Rosenfeld in Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival, though it’s unclear if his death will affect that at all. Also, just this morning The Hollywood Reporter announced that he will be playing iconic DC Comics villain Deathstroke in the animated film Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. His work on that film had been completed.

Ferrer is survived by his wife and two sons.

I didn't know he was Jose Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney's son, of course I didn't know his name either. He was a good actor, RIP.

It's part of their contract.

Nope. Very good character actor. You never saw Traffic? Worth a watch.

It is disheartening to see. More and more people I know are getting diagnosed with cancer, too. One of my friends just started chemo this past Monday for testicular cancer. He has one left now. The chemo has been giving him fits, waking him in the middle of the night so he can hover near a trash bin. His treatment is different than mine, but I've been offering as much advice and insight as I can. Cancer is a hideous malady and I pray that those of you who have not been afflicted with it never are.

"Traffic was critically acclaimed and earned numerous awards, including four Oscars: Best Director for Steven Soderbergh, Best Supporting Actor for Benicio del Toro, Best Adapted Screenplay for Stephen Gaghan and Best Film Editing for Stephen Mirrione. It was also a commercial success with a worldwide box-office revenue total of $207.5 million, well above its estimated $46 million budget."
