The full story on LB Derrick Johnson & FB Anthony Sherman's reworked contracts: The Chiefs - who were tight to the salary cap - have agreed to a major pay cut with linebacker Derrick Johnson, per league source. Johnson, who tore his Achilles last year, was due a base salary $4.75M for 2017 and up to $1M in per game roster bonuses. Under his new terms, he signed a deal with a $1M signing bonus and a $1M fully guaranteed base salary. It creates about $4.25M in cap space for the Chiefs and keeps a key leader around. The 2018 portion of his contract remains unchanged, other than the $500k proration of the new signing bonus. The Chiefs also negotiated a pay cut with FB Anthony Sherman, whose base salary was dropped from $1.55M to $1.1M (fully guaranteed). He had per-game roster bonuses of $12,500 that were dropped to $6,250, which created a total of $550,000 in cap space for Kansas City. These moves likely helped facilitate the recent signing of DT Bennie Logan.

DJ has always been a team player. Old or not I'm going to enjoy his last year or two as a Chief.

Excellent, we need all the help we can get with the cap.

I think DJ knew he likely didn't have a choice in the matter - restructure or be cut. It's the crappy but necessary business side of football.

Yeah, seriously. The Chiefs really boffed that whole situation up. Not sure why he would do it because he has all the leverage, but he is a team guy.

We gain about $9 mil this season by cutting\trading him. But we don't have a replacement. Regardless of what happens at this point with the draft\FA\trades... Alex will be a Chief this season.

.... Next season however. We would free $20+ mil by replacing him with whoever we draft this year. :)

Tired of hoping that the rest of the team plays at peak level at the right time for Alex to win something BIG. This shit is beyond old.......Everybody does realize it has been 47 years since we won it, right?

YayMike 03-17-2017 08:44 AM

I expect Tamba and Colquitt to restructure too. Creating enough space for the rookies and even another low level FA Signing if we need one.

Just to throw fuel on the fire -

We've only won four playoff games since that 1969 season. Four. Statistically speaking we should have lucked into a few more wins than that in 47 years, much less championships. It's unbelievable, really.
