Rotoworld: NFL's Best GMs 2017

8. John Dorsey, Chiefs

Last Year’s Ranking: 11

The Chiefs have 43 wins in four seasons since John Dorsey and Andy Reid came to town. That’s after they won 38 games the seven years prior. Dorsey began by supplementing a promising roster and hasn’t stopped since. Second-rounder Chris Jones and fifth-rounder Tyreek Hill were two of the best selections by any team in last year’s draft. Dorsey has nailed his top picks each of the past three years after whiffing on Eric Fisher. Outside the draft, Dorsey’s squad was able to gracefully move on from Jamaal Charles after signing Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West to team-friendly extensions. Dorsey has accumulated talent on defense while creating an offense that’s better than the sum of its parts. Alex Smith remains the elephant in the room, but Dorsey has wisely avoided forcing a solution. That’s a trap many other general managers are all too eager to fall into. When/if Smith’s replacement finally comes, Dorsey could help Reid hoist his long-sought Lombardi.

The rest...

Spoiler!

John Elway, Rick Smith, Ted Thompson and Ozzie Newsome were all terrible last year.

#8 is about right for someone who turned a franchise around from "beyond pathetic" to "reliable playoff one and done".

"Dorsey has nailed his top picks each of the past three years after whiffing on Eric Fisher."

Sorry, that may be popular on here, but it is simply not accurate. He did the best he could there IMO.

Lol Thompson has done jack shit the past 5 years. He has a HOF QB that he's surrounded with a garbage draft class year after year. Plus he's so stubborn he refuses to supplement his awful drafts with any FA's making it twice as awful.

Dorsey should be in the top 5.

One of the worst drafts for top talent in recent memory. At least we got a starter but damn, that's not what you want at 1.1. Not gonna rehash it though.

Not sure how Schieneder was the 3rd best. That oline was an abortion

I thought the same thing when I read it. Who else should be have picked? Fisher was likely the best pick in that too 10

Eleazar 04-18-2017 09:32 AM

If Fisher had been picked at #10 any year, people would be saying it was a good pick. But for some reason when he's picked at 1 in the worst draft class in recent memory, it's a bust?

How can an above average starter at a key position be a bust?

RealSNR 04-18-2017 09:38 AM

John Elway sucked dick in 2016 and hasn't done anything in 2017 to warrant the 2nd best rating in 2017, but we really like horse-faced shit-chucking reeruns, so we gave him #2!

CoMoChief 04-18-2017 09:45 AM

He didnt exctly whiff on fisher..we just had the 1st overall pick and there wasn't anyone worthy of the slot.

Plus....fisher is still the starting LT. Look at the other OL drafted in top half of draft and where they are today.

That was a historically bad draft.

Thomas Dimitroff should be ranked above all these guys at this time. Hired a great coach, drafted great players and has done a very good job in FA.

Vic Beasley
Jalen collins
Tevin coleman
Grady Jarrett
Keanu Neal
Deion jones
Taylor Gabriel
Alex Mack

All these guys brought in the last 2 years. Wow
