Great news: NFL loosens rules on celebration

Finally the no fun league is becoming fun again.

Goodell is reportedly expected to inform the league’s owners that players can now do a number of things they could not previously do without incurring penalties.

Among the allowed moves are group celebrations, the use of the football as a prop (as opposed to a simple spike), falling to the ground, and when applicable, making snow angels, according to Pelissero.

Also, the 75-man cut down is no longer. Teams will carry 90 players on the roster throughout the entire preseason.

It's not going to make the product better

The NFL is preparing for the Mahomes era.

The league also passed a rule change moving the overtime period from 15 minutes to 10 minutes and eliminated the 75-man cutdown rule. Rosters will now go from 90 men to 53 before the start of the regular season.
The NFL's owners are approved a rule adding a second player who can returned from the injured reserve list, giving more teams flexibility in roster moves.
I like all of those moves. It gives fringe guys an extra opportunity to show that they belong. But damn, talk about black Monday right before the season. That's going to be a ton of guys on the street.

Did any/many guys ever get picked up by another team during training camp if they were in the first round of cuts? My guess is that's pretty rare, so if that's the case, then this is indeed a great opportunity for them.

Interesting. Not sure if I like the shortened overtime period. That is likely going to cause more games to end in ties. I guess I just don't see the need for that move. I'm not sure about the elimination of the cut down to 75. The guys in that cutdown aren't making an NFL roster anyway. What benefit is there to keeping them on the roster an extra week? I definitely like the idea of moving a second player off of injured reserve. A team shouldn't be have to lose a player for the season or sacrifice a roster spot for half the season because a player suffered an 8 week injury in week one or the preseason. I am also glad to see some loosening up on the celebration penalties. They were getting ridiculous.

Sucks to be a charity of the offenders fine recipients.

At least that is something but I don't really like the OT rule change I think that is dumb IMO.

As far as the injured reserve rule change I don't understand why they don't just dump the whole thing and what is the purpose for it anyway? If a player gets hurt he should be able to come back whenever he is healthy, that is the way it is in all the other sports.

These are good moves

"...when applicable, making snow angels..."

I want to see someone get penalized for a lack of snow during their snow angel celebration.

I think the original purpose was to keep teams from using IR to stash players with phantom injuries and get around the 53 man roster limit. If you put him on IR, then he's done for the year. But that also penalizes those who are actually hurt and could return. So, allowing teams to bring back a couple gives them a workable middle ground.
