Patrick Mahomes has the same 40 yd dash as Peyton Manning

Now that I have your attention. He's much more elusive than that. I looked up every 40 yard dash, 10 yard split, 20 yard split, 20-yard shuttle, and 3-cone times of QBs I could find. At least of the QBs not old, about burnt out and over 36 years old (I looked the 30 or so Top QBs under 37)

If there is anything that I think is over valued it's the 40 yard dash, at least in any position other than wide receiver & kick returner. Wouldn't short burst quickness & agility measurables be the best way to evaluate football speed?

One thing I noticed about Patrick Mahomes is he's virtually average to slightly below average in 40 yard & 20 yard straight line speed.

BUT - he's absolutely the quickest and most agile of ANY quarterback except for maybe Lamar Jackson (who for some reason didn't run at the combine). When you start talking about the 20-yard shuttle and the 3-cone drill he is elite. His change-of-direction agility is off the charts.

He has the FASTEST 20-yard shuttle time of 4.08 of any QB in the league. He has the SECOND fastest 3-cone drill out of all of the QBs.

Both of these tests he was faster than Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Deshaun Watson, Cam Newton, Mitch Tribisky, Josh Allen, Marcus Mariota. I'm not even naming the slow guys.

Carson Wentz believe it or not is the closest comp to Mahomes in terms of agility & quickness, but Mahomes has him at 4.08 vs 4.15 in the 20-yard shuttle.

TOP QBs in 20-yard shuttle
Patrick Mahomes
Russell Wilson
Marcus Mariota
Drew Lock
Carson Wentz
Cam Newton

TOP QBs in 3-cone drill
Patrick Mahomes/Carson Wentz/Mitch Trubisky (all within 0.01 of each other)
Marcus Mariota
Josh Allen
Cam Newton

Deshaun Watson is quite a bit slower in the 20 yard shuttle. He's a lot faster than Patrick in a straight line over 40 yards, but Patrick has quicker feet...might help explain why Patrick doesn't get sacked as often. Deshaun has a bad OL, but he also hangs on to the ball too long and I don't think he has the same elusiveness as Pat. The shuttle time shows it at least. Pat's shuttle time is right there with Russell Wilson.

All you gotta do is look at the footage of him clowning Von Miller and Khalil Mack. Those guys are the best in the business and Patrick had no trouble avoiding them in the scramble drill. He has some serious Fran Tarkenton magic to his scrambling IMHO.

From all the hype we are hearing about the Niner pass rush, it sounds like he will definitely need this magic scrambling talent in the big game. I look forward to seeing how it plays out!

Hmm, that's fascinating. You can really see how that translates into his game as well.

Remember how slow Tamba was...and then the game started...game speed is not the same as straight line speed.

So basically Mahomes puts the first yellow wrench he runs over onto “Turbo Acceleration”.

It's not a matter of physical ability, Watson just doesn't know how to move in the pocket and holds onto the ball for far too long. And he actually had one of the better olines in the league this season.

Now I’m going to have that chirpy Super Sprint background music playing in my head all day.

Keep hearing from the national media how Mahomes has gotten fat and slow. Just imagine how fast he’d be if he wasn’t “fat.”

BWillie 01-22-2020 11:34 AM

20-yard shuttle times
Tyreek the freak Hill 4.06
Patrick Mahomes 4.08

One of the reasons why the dude is so good on the move and outside of the pocket. He starts & stops on a dime and from any angle he is quick to go whatever direction he needs. When you have guys rushing you from all sides, it's a great physical attribute to have.

I bet he outruns Dee Ford.

Mahomes ran the top 20-yard shuttle time out of all QBs, which proves his burst and athleticism is among the tops at the position. In fact, his 4.08 shuttle would rank as the third best out of all the WR. Better than any TE. Better than any RB. You get the idea

Great post. And not one bit surprising. One thing that popped out at me Oakland vs kc in the tornado wind was mahomes' quick burst. That was something that just wasn't the same from Jacksonville injury to the bye week. We didn't realize how good it was until it was missing.

I mentioned in another thread that not a lot is said about mahomes playing high school basketball. To me, he runs like a point guard. There's no tackling in basketball. And mahomes has a lot of really subtle moves and quick bursts to dodge defenders instead of going through them. You don't see him juking or stutter stepping a lot like lamar.

I think on this it was one of his long time mentors that gave him a regime for the offseason that they worked on ways to make him more durable for the season and playoffs without losing his niftyness and it payed off. yes he maybe a bit bigger but everything is working out just fine the way they planned it.

I think a lot of it is just down to timing. He seems to know exactly when to jump to juke out of some of those tackles. And he doesn't telegraph what he's going to do next. His play style is so often improvised, I don't think HE always knows what he's going to do next.
