Nah.
Some of my kid's friends were into this. 99% of it is people who are into anime and comic books, video games cartoons, etc. Online art communities. They draw and create a character (their "fursona") and then make or (have made) a costume of their character, there's lots of details about their character's personality, traits, animal lineage etc.
and at these cons they have parades, dance contests, gaming competitions, speeches and classes on how to make costumes or draw characters, etc.
Imagine if it's like a Disney convention but everyone is Walt Disney and the person inside the Mickey Mouse suit at the same time.
I drove them to one in Pittsburgh and hung around to make sure it was safe. TO me it seemed like most of these folks might be outcasts or socially awkward in their school/workplace (the AV or drama nerds) but when they put on the suit they feel free and happy and outgoing.
it was actually pretty cool to see so many people happy and walking around waving at kids, families etc.
Media portrays it as a sex fetish (and yeah maybe like 1 percent or less might like to get freaky in their suits but it's a behind doors consensual thing and I never saw any of that) it was really just like a comic con or something.
But. I did see firsthand people who were like "I AM A RAD KUNG FU FOX" in their suit, then take off the suit and look like Dwight Schrute.
Let 'em be.
