RIP Gil Brandt
Gil Brandt, a Cowboys HOF for his front office work, and I listened to him for years on XM NFL channel. He had a memory like an elephant.

Met him at the Draft back in 2016. “The Godfather” RIP

I made jokes that they'd put that poor old fart on the radio, but other than his voice sounding like it was 8000 years old, he was sharp as a tack and had great stuff to say.
I remember driving home from watching the Chiefs win Super Bowl 54. It was like 1 in the morning, and I was soaking in all of the kudos and awesome stuff being said about my favorite football team. They had Brandt on at this ungodly hour, and he didn't really talk about the game, actually. He talked about the franchise of the Kansas City Chiefs. He talked about knowing Hank Stram and Lenny, and he talked about getting to know Mahomes in college. Talked about destiny and eras and all of the heavy stuff that I didn't quite know how to process at the time. I was still a bit in shock. It was actually one of the things I think back to and smile about often whenever memories of that evening arise. I know he was pretty young at the time, but it still astounds me that he's the guy who DRAFTED Staubach, and here he was just as of a couple years ago doing 3 hour radio shows. |
Dwayne Haskins looks forward to catching up with him in heaven.

Gil Brandt kinda lost it as an analyst a long time ago...he would literally talk about how a draft prospects dad went fishing with the President 40 years ago instead of actual talent, it was weird.

Hate the cowboys. But he had a run on Sirius xm where he was absolutely outstanding. You could tell that those in the business worship the ground he walks on. RIP

Kyle Brandts grandpa. Always wondered how that idiot had a job with the NFLN.

RIP Gil, I will never forget hearing your wonderful stories. Especially about Lamar Hunt and Jerry Jones and Tex Schramm being neighbors in Dallas.

I certainly knew who he was growing up in the 70's, but wow, it sounds like I really missed listening to him talk about football over the last 10 years on radio.
