Actually, isn't that exactly what Alex Smith did in his two playoff games that he has played in?

In the Saints game, in the second half when he had to he made plays, and lots of them. In the Giants game, in a mess for football, rainy windy and muddy, he played it closer to the vest, of course the defense he was playing had a lot to do with that, made just enough big plays while not turning it over to give his team a chance?

Is that not what you just described?
