With this style of play, Alex Smith has to be able to shoot out when the defense forces his hand. And he has to be perfect in the 4th quarter. In the playoffs, even the best defensive teams have a game or two (or more) where the defense gives up some big time points.
I don't think he can do those things the way elite game managers can, but I'll give him a shot to prove what he's got. His 4th quarter performance against Philly was definitely terrific.
