Visually, it was cool. Anyone who calls out the visual experience of Avatar is being a judgy asshole who's never done a creative thing in their life.
Avatar takes itself way too seriously. To quote Peter Griffin, 'it insists upon itself'. Everything's meant to have some deeper meaning, some comment on our society as a whole, and it's really transparent and hamfisted.
Pacific Rim treats its subject matter with respect, but isn't up its own ass about anything. None of the characters are insulting to our intelligence. Their actions make sense. Their arcs are, ironically, not particularly deep. But the flick is overflowing with charm and a sense of style that isn't often found in the mess of cynical boring disasters we're treated to on the regular (Not necessarily stating that Avatar was a cynical boring disaster in this case)
