Chantrels grow up under oaks during the rains but the locals who know where they are always get to them before anyone else who is looking for a location. Many rattlers there ?
They make a hickory syrup nearby. You use it like maple syrup but its not made from sap like maple is. I get maple syrup direct from a farmer in Ohio. We don't have chantrels but morels are a highly sought delicacy in the spring. Usually around turkey season. Timber rattlers some. I killed one last year and have not skinned it yet but I will. My friend was bitten by a copperhead on my farm and Ive seen a few of them. He is 72 and recovered but the swelling was awful.
