Alas, the rules on self defense require that you be in fear of
imminent bodily harm.
Concern that someone would break out of jail, come back to your house and exact revenge for you shooting them in the break in do not qualify as imminent.
The guy murdered at least one of them. Frankly, I think you could get 2 counts to stick if you worked at it.
