I would be ironic if Hollywood was partially responsible for one or both of the people dying in the car. I wanted to slap the kid when he said...'it's going to explode....' No it's not that's what happens in Hollywood. In real life gas don't explode it burns...the only way it explodes if it it can reach vapor concentrations high enough to do so. That is unlikely to happen outside and really not likely to happen if the car is already on fire! But since every Hollywood movie shows cars blowing up, people are too afraid to check on the car and potentially pull out people who may be savable.
Is it zero risk? Hell no, but it's really not likely the car is going to blow up either. The greatest risk of an explosion is before a fire starts when you may have high concentrations of gas vapors around the car. Heh if it's already on fire it's not likely got much in the way of vapors around it.
