Details emerge in Green-Beckham arrest

Late Friday night, Dorial Green-Beckham was arrested, along with two other individuals, in his home town of Springfield. Green-Beckham, John McDaniel and Patrick Prouty, were pulled over in McDaniel's 1999 Jeep Cherokee, which had expired tags. Upon approaching the vehicle, the police officer smelled marijuana.

According to a statement released Saturday night by the Springfield Police Department, officers found "approximately a pound of marijuana and assorted drug paraphernalia."

All three were arrested and booked in the Greene County Jail on suspicion of "possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance." Green-Beckham spent approximately five hours in the jail before being released shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. No bond was posted.

"All three suspects were released pending further investigation and the laboratory testing of physical evidence. The release of suspects pending the filing of formal charges, and without bond, based on the outcome of a completed investigation and lab results, is normal procedure in Greene County for non-violent felonies and most drug cases," the statement from the Springfield police department read. "The arrest of a person is merely an allegation and should not be presumed as conclusion of guilt. All parties are assumed innocent until a finding of guilt in a court of law. The case continues to be under investigation and no further details will be released at this time."

In Missouri, possession of more than 35 grams of marijuana is considered a felony offense, punishable by up to a $5,000 fine and/or seven years in prison. University policy at Missouri states that an athlete charged with a felony would be indefinitely suspended from the team. If convicted, that athlete would be dismissed from the team.

However, Green-Beckham's family does not believe he will be charged in relation to the weekend arrest. John Beckham, Dorial's adoptive father, said as much in a text message to both the Springfield News-Leader and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Saturday:

"After being interviewed he was released. We feel very confident that the investigation will result in no charges against Dorial. Dorial very much regrets being in this situation and our family looks forward to this being resolved."

Green-Beckham, a sophomore at Mizzou, took to Twitter on Saturday evening, posting the following message from his account (@DorialGB5): "People judge before knowing what happen. Let's not judge me for what happen and don't saying anything to me to try to bring me down."

Early on Saturday, Mizzou athletic department spokesman Chad Moller said that the school would not comment until learning more about the incident. Contacted following the release of the statement by the Springfield police, Moller said the school had, at the current time, "nothing more than what I'd said previously."

McDaniel told the Springfield News-Leader that the marijuana in the car did not belong to himself or to Green-Beckham.

Green-Beckham caught a team-high 59 passes for 883 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Tigers this season. School at Mizzou is out of session until January 21st.

PowerMizzou.com will provide updates on this story as they are available.
