Maybe it has been, albeit on a much smaller scale than the whole of creation. The "norm" of society was to see homosexuals as something wrong or evil for thousands of years, and just recently have homosexuals even been recognized as anything other than vile creatures suffering from some defective programming.
Speculating on that is way over my pay grade, however. As I said, I'm no biologist.
