People IMO connect with them more because they are more likely to have done something a lot that is happening in the game.
For example...being best in the world at that ski jump is incredible. But how big is the pool of people that have made a huge jump like that...or are active doing that. Pretty damn small. Same goes for bobsled and all kinds of stuff.
In contrast things like running and swimming? Everyone has experienced them and the people who are best at it rise above of field of basically the world instead of some niche community with access to a bobsled ice course. Also because everyone has experience it's the feats are that much more amazing because you have a reference for how amazing what they are doing is compared to your own abilities.
