From what I understand, Painter's agent did not believe Purdue would go to a certain pay amount (I believe $2 million) to keep him. So when Mizzou got there, it looked like it was over.
Painter gave Purdue one more chance to match, and they (surprisingly) came through.
Of course, that might have been a bullet dodged... since that flirtation, Painter is 53-42 (23-26) at Purdue, and his recruiting has been pretty bad.
I have a hard time believing he would have handled the roster turnover as well as Haith has... since he went through similar roster turnover between the 2010-11 season and 2011-12 season and has never really recovered from it.
