I probably overstated that a little. It's just based on experiences. Probably 80-90 percent of the people in our home schooling support group were doing it for religious reasons (I know this because my folks helped organize and run it, and I helped my dad compile survey responses in Excel as a Computers project).
Many of those had educational backgrounds, like my best friend's mother (who home schooled all 8 of her kids and has a masters in ed from KU). And gave their kids very good educations.
We also saw a lot who had no educational backgrounds - in a few cases, not even high school educations - doing it. That's where the scary/ugly comment came in.
