He has gone on record saying that he puts the team first and wants to win. He is aware that a huge contract will hinder the team's ability to bring in quality talent around him. He has stated, when asked about compensation, that he is at a different place than most other players are when it comes to that. He wants to find a number that is fair to both parties and doesn't kill the team's cap space like the Romos, Cutlers, and Flaccos of the world.
Smith drives around in a Chevy Tahoe to go to work, he's not looking for that $100 million contract. He already made and saved a bunch from his rookie deal; that's why we're all projecting an average of around 12-16 mil a year type deal.
