It appears Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster’s run in Kansas City will soon end.
A person with knowledge of the situation told The Star on Monday that McCluster, who is a free agent, will not return to the Chiefs. He has four or five interested teams and likely will sign elsewhere Tuesday night, when NFL free agency officially begins.
A spokesman for the Chiefs had no comment.
McCluster’s loss would leave a void at punt return and in the slot. He’s coming off the best year of his career, as he made the Pro Bowl due to his contributions on special teams. He returned 58 punts for 686 yards and two touchdowns in 2013, and also had the most productive season of his career as a receiver, catching 53 passes for 511 yards and two touchdowns, all career highs.
The Chiefs currently have a handful of players with punt-return experience under contract for 2014, including running back Joe McKnight, who was signed in January, and former CFL star receiver Weston Dressler, who was signed in February.
