The question is "Can Alex Smith get a team to the Super Bowl".
He walked off the field in New Orleans with the NFC Championship game more or less wrapped up, but I know that won't carry weight with people who probably also blame Smith for the Colts loss despite playing maybe his best game as a Chief.
So the schools are:
*Yes, Alex is good enough to get to the Super Bowl.
*I'm not sure if he's good enough or not.
*No, he's not good enough.
If you're in the first camp you want to pay him. If you're in the second camp, it would be madness to send him away and start over. Surely the chances of him winning a Super Bowl are much greater than that of a random rookie draft pick.
Of course, the third camp doesn't want to pay him because they think he's not the guy, but that is a pretty hard case to make. His numbers over the past 5 seasons are very consistent.
I think the sensible answer is that we pay him for the next 2-3 years. Camps 1 and 2 would be happy, and by the end of that period, he'll be either at the age where he begins to decline or we'll know he is the guy.
