He wasn't conservative in this game. He marched the team down the field and made plenty of throws that weren't checkdowns.
You have to weed out designed playcalls and screens, and there were plenty of them.
Smith did take the team downfield on 2 long, productive drives. Where he was less effective was the red zone and we don't know if that was him or Reid's playcalling. Given that it's the preseason, I'll blame playcalling but fully acknowledge that Smith was lackluster in the red zone last year.
