Yeah, I don't think so. So the rights to ET and other big hits were lost because there was no sequel or remake?
I believe you are thinking of when rights are first acquired, often if the buyer doesn't actually make a movie, they lose the rights.
When they acquired the rights, it could have been part of the deal that rights would revert to the original owner if no sequel, but it isn't a rule.
