Lost my mother 3 and a half years ago...now dad has stage 4 lung cancer...but we are a very close family and we make new memories all the time. He will go home some day, probably sooner than later, and my heart will break. But I'm choosing to remember the good and enjoy every day I have with him.
Your pops sounds like he IS a great man...there is no WAS...he's still around man, just in a different way. God Bless.
