The multilayer ball allows pros to pound the ball off the tee because it doesn't spin much on driver hits and still generate enough spin to stop it on greens like Augusta's.
Shooting 270 with a Titleist Tour Balata and a King Cobra 190cc steel headed driver w/ a DG-X100 shaft is worlds apart.

Same scope though, ability to condition the course has changed as well. Greens mowed less than .100" with tournament knives today were mowed .125" and above. Sub-aire systems etc.
