In order for there to be an abundance of merchandise, the movie has to be successful.
This movie is not appealing to children. It's nowhere near TMNT and Transformers.
TMNT is STILL a relevant children's cartoon, so kids were aware of the franchise prior to the movie release. It's high CGI action starring Ninjas and already had a following.
Transformers: High CGI kick ass robots doing kick ass robot stuff...and again....was still a relevant name.
Ghost busters isn't nearly as relevant. Kids aren't exposed to it. There aren't any Ghost Buster cartoons airing in the morning. The toys haven't been around for god knows how long...It's not high CGI....it's 4 lesbians whom children can't identify with.
If this move were to be successful...it needed to appeal to those of us who watched it as children/young adults.
Ghost Busters is far too dated and removed from pop culture for today's kids to identify with it and give a shit.
