The nearest I can remember is the summer 2005 - Chris Carpenter had a streak of about 20 starts where his ERA was below 1.50. Even when Carpenter was on, he carried himself like Arrieta is doing right now - just the lord of creation on the mound.

Comparing someone to vintage Carp is the highest compliment I can give a modern starter because Carpenter's bulldog mentality may be the most impressive thing I've seen in a decade. The guy just absolutely refused to ever cave in and was certain he'd beat you.

Arrieta looks like that but better.
