I remember a story I read a while back, I can't remember if I read it on CP or not. It was about a student that made his own lunch one morning, and accidentally grabbed a can of beer from the fridge to throw in his lunch, rather than a can of soda. He realized it as soon as he opened his lunch that afternoon. He immediately took it to the first teacher in sight, and explained the situation. Rather than emptying the beer and sending the kid on his way, the teacher said she was obligated to report it, and the principal suspended the kid. IIRC, the principal said the kid absolutely did the right thing, but his hands were tied due to regulations, and he had to suspend him. The school board affirmed that because of policy, the kid had to be suspended.
Shit like that and the story in the OP are a huge problem. Common sense would have told the teacher and principal not to punish the kid. However, you almost understand why they followed policy when you read a dude's job is in jeopardy just because he chose common sense over policy and tried to save a young girl's life.
**** this country sometimes.
