Kind of interestingly, Ernie Hudson's character was originally written as another scientist with multiple PhDs, etc. They never really give you his history in the movie, but in subsequent iterations of the Ghostbusters lore (novels, cartoons, video games, etc.), the Winston character is very much a scientist.

Yeah, the first movie he was presented mostly as a guy who came in looking for a paycheck. I forget the exact line, but he said something along the lines of: "I'll believe anything you tell me as long as a paycheck is involved." But it still didn't result in a dumbed down character.
