The only value I see to this approach in flipping the Chase Danielesess' of the world for cap space and/or picks, is that the position itself is not what it once was in terms of NFL-ready talent.
The last two guys in a draft who were considered "can't miss" had mixed results, so I can understand why taking fliers and hoping for the best, or hoping to recoup with development would be considered a smart move.
That said, at some point you have to make a legitimate investment, and that rarely happens in round 5.
