Some of that probably comes back to Cuthbert struggling in back to back years as a minor leaguer. Hosmer sucked initially, got his hand and vision fixed, and took off offensively.
I was pro-Hosmer extension in June, when it looked like he had put everything together. After this slump, which showed he still is the same stubborn, flawed hitter who is going to be prone to long slumps, I don't care.
I can see the argument his swing is going to break down as he ages and starts to lose bat speed. So much going on in his swing, and he only gets away with it because of his quick wrists and bat speed.
Also makes me wonder if the guys who have been tutored in the minors by someone other than Jack Maloof (who was the minor league hitting coordinator before his failed stint as MLB hitting coach) are perhaps a little better off.
