Uh. Yeah.
Because, remember, the Chiefs were a 2-14 dumpster fire that had a player go murder/suicide in the parking lot and a fan revolt.*
Reid, Dorsey and Smith came in and got into the playoffs in their first year and haven't done worse than 9-7 to this point. Fans are placated (... well, were, until Donovan dicked up the parking) and there's a reasonable expectation for the team to do no worse than 9-7 this year given they went 11-5 the prior season (or at least that's what I've been told. Whatever)
As Sacc said it last year, this is the "Golden Age" of Chiefs' football. If Sm ith being a game manager operating with the benefit of a defense that doesn't allow more than 21 points on the average keeps the team in contention all the way to the end of the season there is literally no incentive for the FO to do anything better.
It's Martyball all over again. Stay above .500, sneak into the playoffs and maybe make some noise.
It's Martyball.
* Implication being that the same core of players that went 17-15 in the two years prior to 2012 had nothing to do with the play on the field from 2013-onward.
