A lot of people identify themselves with the team, and attach personal worth to the success of the team. Therefore, when someone criticizes their team they aren't just talking shit about a sports franchise--it's a personal insult. I believe that is why so many are unwilling to make hard, objective observations about the status of their favorite teams, because to admit that they are substandard is to admit one's own failings.

If you're a kid or in your 20's, I understand living and dying with the team to an extent. But once you're an adult, a real adult, you've got real world shit to deal with, and spilling so much emotion and time into an entertainment product is probably a losing proposition, especially if you look at the kind of product the Chiefs have offered to their customers.

If the Patriots, Broncos, and Packers are Wal-Mart or Costco, the Chiefs are Pamida.
Excellent post. I would say though I was a true die hard Chiefs fan in my twenties\early thirties but I have always been a realist. I was semi-smart enough to know that Bono and Grbac were shit castoff QB's and they would never win with those guys unless the defense held teams to 10 pts or less. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to compare your QB's against the other elite QB's in the league to see there is a huge disparity.

Probably why as I have gotten older it has become easier to be less emotionally involved because I know unless you go draft a franchise QB you aren't winning shit.

Grunhard said something really smart this morning, he said Alex could take your team to the SB if you have an elite defense, but those defenses only come around once a decade. The other 9 seasons are won by franchise QB's.

Game over..
