The one critical flaw in your line of thought...is you project your own morality on a group of tight-knit billionaire businessmen. They painstakingly vet potential owners...why? You are the demographic they target...they profit of your naivety/trust.
Owners are merely one of 32 tentacle arms..that connect to a mother-hub profit center. The ones that appear to care...is simply because it's their hobby and offers a bit of limelight. Hunt wasn't heart-broken over making a quarter of a billion dollars this year.
NFL has eroded into fodder for the plebeians...just like in ancient Rome. It gave the disgruntled an avenue/outlet for their hostility.... redirected from being exploited by their government. It's the modern-day coliseum...a satiation/diversion for the masses.
