He's not really fast or athletic. Piss-poor shuttle times, near the bottom in the 40, lousy broad jump, bad vertical, dead last in the 3-cone. Those are all 'athleticism' and explosion drills and he was in the bottom 1/3 of all participating quarterbacks in all of them. 'Lumbering' was putting it nicely; dude looked more like Landry Jones out there than he looked like McNabb.
On tape he flashes quicker than that at times, but it also makes me wonder if he didn't just get really goddamn lazy and fall out of shape. If that's the case, that's a worse sign than anything.
I wanted to like the guy, I really did. But he sucked last year (badly) and while Pest says it's all Kelly's fault, it's also very likely that teams adjusted to a more pocket-oriented offense than they were expecting in 2015 when he unexpectedly (sorta) won the job and Golson transferred. Trying to figure out what ND was going to do as a defense was a little tricky in 2015 and the number of times that Golson hit an open WR is a testament to that. He made very few high degree of difficulty throws, even at his best in '15.
It's the frame. The guy is just built like a goddamn QB. But his arm strength has shown only slightly above average and his accuracy just isn't there. Once he went out there and just shit all over the combine, he started to look more and more like a 2nd or even 3rd round pick to me.
I'm just out of positive things to say about him. The best you can do is what Pestilence did and essentially explain away his failures. But when it comes right down to it, you're making an argument around other people's negatives rather than his positives at that point. That's a pretty sketchy way to go about building a narrative for a first round pick. When 'yeah, but' is the most important part of his scouting report, maybe the 2nd day is the place for him...
