Last year was Merrifield's rookie year and he got sent down when his bat went to crap. I don't see it as a stretch for him to start the season in AAA. To me, it'd be better than getting nothing for Colon.
On a different note: Wood and Young have outperformed Karns in training camp.

I just think the 'super-utility' appeal of Merrifield is going to be too much for Ned to pass up. I like Colon, but he does not offer this team a lot being that he can't play great D and his bat is really inconsistent, in addition to not offering any real 'pop'.
Karns had actually looked pretty good this spring till his last start. It'll be interesting to see how he bounces back in his next one.
