If that's the case, a playoff appearance would be enough for me to consider it a successful trade on its own. However, the Chiefs would have to be continuously scouring for a replacement for him for me to be pleased with their handling of the position if the best he can do is a playoff appearance.

Damn...that's pretty much exactly what happened.
I think I set pretty fair expectations for Smith and he hit them pretty much on the nose. The organization gave him some time to prove he could do better than just a playoff appearance and when it was determined that he plateaued, they found his replacement.
Granted, I still think they waited a year too long but after his 2015 season, he earned the rope they gave him in '16. And by giving him that rope, they got a better long-term prospect in Mahomes than they'd have had in Lynch. So all told, I'd say it worked out.
