If kids had the energy they could probably rack up a lot. I also suspect that people today go out to avoid staying at home to give away candy. Probably people don't want their kids having so much sweets so not as much T or T participants.

I'm 41 and it was the same way, once I was about 8 we'd go out with Mom or Dad for a while, then continue on ourselves.
We didn't hand ot candy this year, with 2 under 7 we just took them around. We are the only house on our side of the block, and our steep driveway really cuts down on traffic. A couple of years ago I bought 60 full size bars and gave out only about half.
Heck, even though it was cold and snowed all day, by 8:15 as we neared home I realized we were the only ones still on the streets.
